Understanding the PSAT

The PSAT (Preliminary SAT) is a practice test designed to help high school students prepare for the SAT. It evaluates your skills in Reading, Writing, and Math and serves as a valuable tool to gauge your readiness for college admissions exams. With a focus on developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, the PSAT can also qualify students for the National Merit Scholarship Program, making it an important step in the college prep journey.

FAQs

What is the purpose of the PSAT?
The PSAT is primarily a practice test for the SAT, but it can also qualify students for the National Merit Scholarship Program. It gives you an early insight into the types of questions and sections you'll encounter on the SAT.
While the PSAT is similar to the SAT in structure, it is shorter and does not affect college admissions directly. The PSAT is designed to prepare students for the SAT by familiarizing them with the test format and types of questions.
The PSAT can be taken once per year. It’s usually taken in the 11th grade. If you're aiming for a better SAT score, the PSAT is a great way to identify areas for improvement, but you can retake the SAT multiple times.
Your PSAT score gives you an excellent baseline for SAT prep. We provide detailed score analysis to help identify areas of weakness, which allows for targeted practice and improvement on the SAT.
The PSAT itself is not used for college admissions. However, strong performance on the PSAT can increase your eligibility for scholarships, particularly the National Merit Scholarship. It’s also an early indication of how well you may perform on the SAT.
